LEGO Dala Horses

Some of my heritage is Swedish, and I’ve always loved the simple beauty of the traditional Swedish Dala Horse.

Originating from the province of Dalarna, the painted wooden horses were originally carved as toys for children, but gained wide popularity as souvenirs of Sweden at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. They continue to be collected and displayed proudly in homes today.

Recently I decided to see if I could come up with a simple and elegant LEGO representation of the Dala Horse:

And once I started building them I started looking for fun ways to decorate them. Soon I began making other variations and I was amazed at how much could be conveyed in the Dala horse form.

So, here’s my first batch of pop culture LEGO Dala horses! Enjoy!

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars Cards

You might have heard that Dark Horse is publishing a limited series of Star Wars comics based on George Lucas’ first draft of Star Wars:

I bought it and it’s fine, but as far as non-movie Star Wars goes, I think my favorites are still the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars cartoons. They’re beautifully drawn, the stories are great and nicely paced, the acting is better than the prequels, and there’s just a whiff of Samurai-Jack-ness about them.

So when I found this collection of Topps cards on Ebay, I had to pick them up and share them. Here’s just a taste (you can see the rest over at Flickr):

How To Draw A Cartoon C-3PO – Tutorial

Last year to celebrate May the 4th I showed you how to draw a cartoon R2D2. So this year I thought it only natural to complete the pair and show you how to draw your very own cartoon C-3PO! (Draw both droids and really show off!)

When you’re finished, feel free to tweet, pin, email or otherwise share a pic of everyone’s favorite protocol droid with me and I’ll post it over at Pinterest! And if you’d like to grab the tutorial to post on your own blog or website, you’re more than welcome to. (A link back would be appreciated.) Enjoy:
