Webcomic Fundraising

Cartoon200Just heard this on NPR:

Democratic strategists in Kansas told first-time political candidate Sean Tevis earlier this summer that he would need at least $26,000 to have a shot at beating a Republican incumbent. So Tevis pounded the pavement, but after two weeks of knocking on doors, he had collected only $25 — and two dog bites.

So he put his skill running corporate Web sites to work and posted online a stick-figure comic strip he drew that served as his fundraising appeal. The cartoon went live July 16, and in a week and a half, it paid off. Big time.

Top 5 Ways to be a Jerk Cartoonist

1) Make sure you promise an unreasonable deadline you think the client wants, and then deliver late. Over-promise and under-deliver. Nice!

2) Take the tiniest germ of humor you can find and squeeze a cartoon out of it by writing an excessively long caption to explain why this is so funny. Brevity is wit my arse.

3) Ask for other cartoonists’ markets and contacts. Nothing endears you to a professional more than asking to see their books.

4) Argue print vs. web and refuse to consider other points of view. You know you’re right – make sure we all know it too.

5) Beg for criticism, and then explain why it’s wrong. Classy!

Free!

There’s been even more talk than usual lately among cartoonists about "free" content, and I think this recent post, "Why Are You Giving Away Content For Free?" over at Dosh Dosh explains it better than most.

A snippet:

The truth is, if you want to sell more products or services, you need to develop a reputation which exceeds your slogan, sales letter or promised benefit. Free content is a tool which helps you to develop publicity. It will eventually generate demand for services, products and premium content.

Enjoy!
