Ultraviolet & Hoodwinked – Reviews

OK, I’ve decided on a new format for my movies reviews. I’m going for the movie pitch approach. You’ll understand, don’t worry…

Ultra

It’s Underworld, meets Revlon commercial, meets the color wheel.

Here’s the tag – “The Blood War is On, and You’re Worth It.”

Hoodwinked

It’s Into the Woods, meets the Flonase bee.

Tagline – “Plot, Animation & General Concept Trouble In The Hood”

Spider-Man 3 Teaser

So the first Spider-Man 3 trailer came out yesterday, and I gotta tell ya, it pretty much made me forget about ol’ Supes. I’ve always been more of a Marvel guy anyway.

Let’s take a closer look at some still close-ups, shall we?

Spiderman3-1

Wait a minute, this is Sin City 2!

Spiderman3-2

Love the feel of the Venom stuff… Goopy!

Spiderman3-3

The Sandman looks great too!

Spiderman3-4

Oh Harry… How could ya…

Spiderman3-5

Nice image to end the trailer on.

Only 11 months to go! I suppose Superman will have to do in the meantime.

Cartooning – Behind the Scenes

I just finished watching the 1965 Jack Lemmon film, How to Murder Your Wife

Title1

…and I thought it might be interesting, through this remarkably accurate depiction, to show how we cartoonists go about our daily lives.

First off, the studio.

Studio

Although mine is only one story, this is fairly typical of most cartoonists’ workspaces. Spiral staircases, chandeliers, priceless art…

Also, you might have noticed…

Shower

…the manservant. I don’t know how other artists start their days, but if my butler doesn’t hand me fresh-squeezed orange juice while I shower, I’m just off kilter for the rest of the day.

My wife wakes up more leisurely…

Bed

…thanks to putting on her makeup and styling her hair the night before.

After breakfast, I head to the club where I discuss my many financial and legal matters with my on-retainer lawyer while getting my morning massage.

Lawyer

After another shower, and more butler-served OJ, I get down to cartooning, dressed in clothing depicting my characters.

Shirt

Later my lingerie-clad wife dances on our piano for the evening’s dinner party guests.

Piano1

I finish the day’s cartoons, and pass out at my drawing board in my tux.

Drawing Board

All in all, a pretty standard day. Thank goodness Hollywood got cartooning right for once!

Aeon Sux

Aeon-Flux-20050711065652403-1

With the recent rash of late night feedings, late night diaper changes and the like, I’ve been working my Netflix queue hard.

I just finished up Aeon Flux and while I wasn’t expecting a great movie, I was surprised how disappointed I was.

The source material is odd but interesting, and I think they had trouble pounding such unconventional into the traditional “we need another big action set piece here” mold. (Also, how they ended up making Charlize Theron in a skin tight catsuit look plain is beyond me.)

And am I the only one who thinks all this damn wire work jumped the kung-fu shark two Matrix sequels ago? Honestly, it’s just boring now. Time for someone to come up with something new, or, truer to Hollywood, repackage some older shit again.

Anyway, I’ll give them some credit for the attempt, and as 2 AM bottle fodder it’s fine, but for goodness sake don’t waste an evening on this wannabe stylish vanilla.

“Your Dependable Hollywood Quote Whore”

200604171446

I ran across a fun movie review site the other day which describes itself thusly:

We at The Weekly Blurb believe that every film, no matter how good or bad, deserves a blurb – a nice, punchy, positive bit of praise that can be pulled out here and pasted in your movie’s advertising.

Why do they do this?

We don’t know. Maybe it’s some desperate need for attention, a strange cumpulsion to see our words in print. We’re not sure. We’re trying to figure it out. All we know is that if you have a movie, we want to be Your Dependable Hollywood Quote Whore.

I loved their review of Disney’s The Wild (which garnered 7-1/4 stars BTW). Here’s a taste:

The Wild is the debut film for director Steve “Spaz” Williams; and folks, it’s just the kind of comedy you’d expect from a guy named “Spaz!” A madcap assortment of crazy cut-ups live in New York City, and boy, is it ever a zoo-because they’re animals! Can you imagine? Keifer Sutherland shines as Samson the Lion, leader of a zany pack of animal kingdom wiseacres. Soon enough they must brave the big city and the jungle to rescue one of their friends who’s been shipped off to the wild. It’s a hilarious new twist on last year’s increda-hit Madagascar, and there’s even a bunch of zany penguins! Everyone knows you just can’t have a funny animal-ation movie without penguins!
