Andertoons Uncut

Yesterday I was really excited to see cartooning pal Mark Heath back up and blogging again!

The most interesting of yesterday’s entries for me was this blog about assembling the Sunday comic. There’s a lot of different pieces to be cobbled together in Photoshop, and it’s just so neat to see how differently comics artists work today vs. the gigantic WYSIWYG originals I just saw in Milwaukee.

Anyway, I was recently poring over some originals, and I found this rare uncut sheet of my cartoons.

To save on paper I usually do three to four cartoons on a 9×12 sheet of Borden & Riley. Then I cut them out (sometimes in really goofy shapes depending on the layout) and scan them in.

Then a little Photoshopping and voilà!

For some reason this one never met my scissors:

Here are the cartoons in their final forms:

Boy Genius

Yesterday I was talking with my wife about a number of cartoon ideas I was fleshing out. A number of them, for some reason, revolved around pirates.

Well, my soon-to-be-three-year-old son overheard and decided he’d do his own cartoon, just like Daddy.

Here’s his gag, word for word: “One pirate says to another pirate ‘I’m tired of eating toast,’ so the other one gives him a muffin.”

And here’s his art:

Henrypirate1

OK, it’s a little sketchy, so here’s how he explained it to me:

Henrypirate2

No bad for how young he is, and, honestly, he sort of copied the basic construction of my idea, which is: Pirate to another – “I’m tired of ‘first mate.’ How about ‘co-pirate?'”

My wife and I have discussed children following their parents into careers, and specifically cartoonists, their children, and the numerous undead ‘legacy strips.’ And while I can’t say I want the boy to follow so closely in my footsteps, I can see how flattering it could be.

Anyway, not bad eh?

Follow That Cartoon (Part 1)

I’m starting a new series of entries today that I’m really excited about. I’ve decided to follow a cartoon from it’s inception, hopefully all the way through the sale.

So, here’s where ti all begins:

Followthatcartoon1

The cartoon we’re going to follow is the top one. It seems a little weird, but I like it.

(In case you can’t read it, here it is: Car mechanic holding baby w/ rattle to person – “I think I found what was causing that rattle.”)

I saw my baby daughter’s rattle on the counter and this one just sort of came to me.

This is how I always start. I just free associate for a bit and see what comes out. Then I jot it down on a piece of paper and toss it in a box to be drawn later.

I’ll write again when I do the sketch…

Les Widget Andertoons

One of the craziest parts of having my cartoons online is finding stuff about them in different languages.

I took a little French in college, but I can’t translate all of this:

Affichez sur votre blog une bande-dessinée différente chaque jour, selon un catégorie que vous aurez choisit précédement. Les BD Andertoons sont utilisées dans le célèbre Reader’s Digest, dans le Wall Street Journal et dès maintenant sur votre blog Typepad.

Another blog has this to say:

pour faire apparaître une bande-dessinée chaque jour

Anyone know enough French to help me out?
