Follow That Cartoon (Part 6)

Welcome back to Follow That Cartoon! A series of entries in which I track the creation, submission, and, hopefully, the sale of this cartoon:

 Cartoon Blog 5922 1

OK, it’s been a while since my last entry, so let’s get caught up.

As you might remember this was rejected by Reader’s Digest, but it’s difficult to complain considering I have two in their November issue.

I did end up sending this to Harvard Business Review toward the end of August, but it’s been two months with no reply one way or another.

To be fair, there was a change in cartoon staff, and often it takes a bit to come to grips with the stacks and stacks of cartoons coming in. But I think 60 days is enough time for me to officially send it elsewhere.

Who’s the next lucky recipient you ask? Why my good friends at Good Housekeeping!

I put it on the top of the stack too!

I’ll letcha know what I hear…

Follow That Cartoon (Part 6)

Welcome back to Follow That Cartoon! A series of entries in which I track the creation, submissions, and, hopefully, the sale of this cartoon:

5922 1

So last time I reported that this had been passed over by Reader’s Digest. The good news, though, was I sold two other cartoons to them, so it’s kinda hard to complain.

Anyway, this shipped out again this morning to Harvard Business Review. I don’t think it has a chance in hell of being purchased there (it really doesn’t fit their content), but I’ve been wrong before.

In any case, HBR sees most of my stuff right after the Digest, so we’ll see what happens.

BTW, a fond farewell to the current/former cartoon submissions editor at HBR. She was just wonderful to work with, and was kind enough to drop me a lovely farewell note this morning. Here’s my favorite part:

I have one up in my cube right now, of two hunters warily surveying a bear with a heart taped to his chest: “Careful, Don. Maybe he’s a Care Bear and maybe he ain’t.” It’s one of my favorites and makes me smile every time I glance over at it.

That’s what every cartoonist hopes for, I think. It’s what Lynn Johnston called “fridge space” when I met her a few years back. To know that someone liked your cartoon enough to cut it out and tape it up somewhere… That’s the best compliment you can get.

Anyway, I’ll letcha know when it gets rejected…

Follow That Cartoon (Part 5)

Welcome back to Follow That Cartoon! A series of entries in which I track the creation, submissions, and, hopefully, the sale of this cartoon:

Got my first “no thanks” from the cartoon editor for Reader’s Digest.

Ftt-Reject1-1

The good news is I have a number of others being held for the next big meeting, but #5922 isn’t among them.

Oh well, off to the next market. I’ll letcha know when I send it out again.

(BTW, while looking this one up in my database, I couldn’t help but notice its similarity to this cartoon. Apparently I’m already plagiarizing myself.)

(Another BTW, you can follow the rest of the entries starting with this previous one.)

Follow That Cartoon (Part 4)

Welcome back to Follow That Cartoon! A series of entries in which I track the creation, submissions, and, hopefully, the sale of one cartoon.

OK, last time, I finished up the cartoon & entered it into my database. Now it’s time to send it out to its very first market!

The cartoon editor at Reader’s Digest emailed me to let me know he needed submissions soon, and they’re one of my best markets, so this will be the first place this cartoon goes.

I’ll letcha know when I hear back…

Follow That Cartoon (Part 3)

Welcome back to Follow That Cartoon! A series of entries in which I track the creation, submissions, and, hopefully, the sale of one cartoon.

(BTW, you can click on the images to see larger ones.)

OK, I got a comment (I’m looking at you, Lynch!) that the pacifier I’d drawn didn’t come off well in the final cartoon. So, lucky reader, I thought I’d fix it and show you the process:

Followbaby1

Here’s the “binky” that some saw as two teeth…

Followbaby2

…but with a flick of my graphics pad, it’s now a happy smile!

Followbaby3

I also thought the rattle was getting lost, so I erased around it…

Followbaby4

…and darkened the ends.

I also added the lettering in the cartoon and the caption:

Followlettering1

The repaired ink version with the new improved baby.

Followlettering2

Adding some narcissism…

Followlettering3

…and distorting it.

Followlettering4

A meaningless detail…

Followlettering5

…that for some reason I couldn’t let go of.

Followlettering6

And, finally, the caption.

After all that I give it its number and save it:

Follownumbering

Then it’s entered into my database:

Followdb

Now it’s basically waiting until I get some cartoons ready to send out. See ya then…

(BTW, wanna see the last FTC? Here you go…)
