High School Toon-sical

So a while back my home town newspaper, the North Scott Press, did an article about me and my cartoons. As a result I got a gush of mail from people I haven't heard from in years.

This came from my high school geometry teacher, Mr. Birkhofer:

The reason I am e-mailing you; is that I want you to know I still have my Mark Anderson poster: "The 3 great minds of logic". (Euclid, Spock, and Opus) And of course it has your motto on the back.

I remember this vividly! Mr. Birkhofer was a big Bloom County fan and he asked me to make a poster for his class room wall. He was kind enough to send along a pic:

I'd forgotten about the motto:

Oh my goodness…

Anyway, so nice to hear from everybody! Now if I can just get Mr. Mohr to send me that old 'Joe the Piranha" story…

High School Cartoons – 1/21/87

Here's another old cartoon of mine from my high school paper, The Lance.

Today's is from January 21, 1987. Here's a bit of the page it was on:

And here's the cartoon close up:

I remember this one pretty well actually. I was trying to do more of a Mad inspired comic with jokes in each panel.

Of course the jokes are bad (the last two panels I don't think I even understood then), but the basic structure is OK. Art's not too bad either.

Still, I only ever tried this setup once, and I think that was best.

High School Cartoons – 10/1/86

Here's another old cartoon of mine from my high school paper, The Lance.

Today's is from October 1, 1986. Here's a bit of the page it was on:

And here's the cartoon close up:

Dunno if I'd just been rejected when I did this, but it's a pretty poor gag, if you can call it a gag at all.

And a guy wearing a tie at school? Ugh…

In the web parlance of our time, epic fail.

High School Cartoons – 9/17/86

Here's another old cartoon of mine from my high school paper, The Lance.

Today's is from September 17, 1986. Here's a bit of the page it was on:

Lance 09 17 1986 Page

And here's the cartoon close up:

Lance 09 17 1986

This is really more of an illustration than a cartoon, so I can't rate the gag. You can see this is in my Don Martin big nose, giant chin phase. I think most cartoonists my age went through that.

Anyhow more on Wednesday!
