Wording

cartoon writing wording

I love words.

And it’s a good thing since writing is really the crux of the whole cartoonist thing. You can be the greatest artist in the world, but if your writing stinks, believe you me, nobody is going to be buying.

One of my favorite tricks when I’m stumped is to hit the books. Actually, a few specific books. I’ve got a number of different reference volumes to kick start the writing process:

So if I’ve got a specific topic in mind, say for a custom cartoon, I’ll obviously start by looking for that specific word. Each book is organized a little differently, but they all make finding related content fairly easy.

If I’m just writing to write, however, I love to just leaf through and see what strikes my brain’s fancy. I try not to linger too long on any specific page, I just quickly skim and see if anything pops.

A favorite trick of mine is to look at phrases about and/or containing a word and seeing if there’s some way to combine them. It doesn’t always end up in a successful cartoon, but, if nothing else, you’re priming the cartoon writing pump.

Now remember, these books aren’t going to solve all of your problems. Nothing beats just sitting yourself down regularly, staring down a blank piece of paper and actively writing cartoons. (You’d be surprised how often I hear budding cartoonists complain about waiting for their muse to visit.) But used judiciously, they’re all great tools to have in your gag writing toolbox.

It looks like a few might already be out of print, but you should be able to pick them up cheaply on Ebay or Amazon.

Word up!

Book Update

Rubmytummycover

I’ve gotten my ISBN, my Library of Congress control number, and my bar code all put on and in the book now.

I also threw in some page numbers! (Oops! Forgot all about that last time!)

Now I’m just waiting for my preview copy to arrive. I’ll letcha know once its available, but it should be soon! Woo-hoo!

Two Books That Caught My Eye

I don’t remember how I ran across either of these, but they’re fun to point out.

The first is The Peanuts Grand Piano Book. Sounds like it opens up like a piano, and it’d be a cute bard book for the wee ones.

Peanutspianobook

The second, We Have Ways of Making You Laugh, is the latest by one of my idols, Sam Gross:

Grossswastika

I’d love to hear the meetings involved in bringing this to print! If anyone can pull this off, it’s Gross.

Anyhoo, check ’em out if you get a chance.

Spot the Innovation

Image MaxiCartoon compatriot Mark Heath is trying something really interesting over at Fundable. (I was gonna say he’s putting the “fun” in “fundable,” but that would be lame.)

Here’s the deal:

I draw Spot the Frog, a syndicated comic strip. You can find samples at my site and comics.com. The first Spot the Frog collection will soon go out of print and I’d like to give it a second life by offering it as a daily email. The book strips are black and white, but I’ll be coloring them to celebrate their tour through your IN box. I’ll also be writing a new introduction, and adding some strips that didn’t fit in the book. And when something strikes me, I’ll add a few thoughts to certain strips; their inspiration, secret meaning, or why I liked them.

Before I begin this project, I’d like to know how many readers are interested in subscribing.

Remember: fundable will take your pledge, but they won’t charge your credit card until the goal is reached. If we fall short, you’ll owe nothing, and I’ll have more free time to entertain Willy, the office poodle.

I don’t think a cartoon collection has ever been offered this way, so I’m feeling very Lewis and Clark about this, minus the bickering.

Neat huh? So you pledge some money, and if it all works out, Mark gets to work, and you get your daily newly fully-colored Spot email with occasional bonus content!

I’ve put my Paypal where my click is (money and mouths are soooo 20th century), you should too!

Book Cover – Take 3

OK, there’s still some tweaking o do here, but I took a lot of advice and here’s what I’ve got now:

Bookcover3-1

This is, of course, the entire wraparound cover. And it’s even got the new Andertoons logo on the spine!

I changed the font from Tahoma to my Andwritten font, and I have to agree with Mark, it looks better.

I’d also considered doing the cartoon larger, but I’m gonna stick with my strengths here and go with a simple panel cartoon.

Whatcha think?
