Gummy Miles (Hobo #186)

So after an hour and half of driving back and forth to the zoo with the kids, and a few hours walking around the zoo with the kids, I can’t say I was dying to get down to any real work this afternoon.

Enter 700 hoboes!

What is/are 700 hoboes you ask? John Hodgman started it, Mark Frauenfelder had an idea, and, well, a bunch of people looking to waste some time started drawing.

You can learn more at E-Hobo!

Anyway, I took it upon myself to create hobo #186, Gummy Miles:

The Evolution of My Signature

Mike Lynch & I were talking the other day about Mort Drucker, and I mentioned that I’ve always loved his signature:

I remember being a kid admiring Drucker’s work in Mad and thinking how cool those three lines for the “M” were (and are).

So, I dug into the archives and found various incarnations of my own signature. You can even see me copying Drucker a bit…

Here’s one from when I worked on my high school newspaper (1985):

And here’s the cartoon it came from (click the cartoon to enlarge it):

Another from high school, circa 1986:

And the cartoon:

Another high school signature from 1987:

And its corresponding cartoon:

And here we jump quite a bit. I studied to be, and worked as a trombonist for about 10 years, worked some day jobs, etc… And then I got back into cartooning.

This is from 1998 (I think…):

You can see the cartoon it came from here

I changed to this, my current and probably final version, around 2002 or so:

I have thought over the years to changing my signature to “Andertoons” to help drive traffic to the site, but, honestly, this is probably the end of the line.

Glorious Failure, and Plenty of It

I was talking about failing and failing often earlier in the week, and I ran across this Henry Martin book, “Good News – Bad News.”

Martin is one of my favorite cartoonists, and goodness knows he was successful, but when I got to the back of the book, I noticed how many of the cartoons were listed as ‘previously unpublished.’ (Click on the images to see larger ones…)

There’s a lot of failure in the back of that book; a lot of really good, useful, necessary failure.

And that’s why Martin sold so much.

Mucho Mailbox!

AndertoonsmailboxYes, it’s mailbox time again! Let’s see what people are emailing me lately…

I enjoy cartoons. Be anything!

Good for you. You too!

hey do you have any colored cartoons i am tired of black and white holla.

I’m not up on slang (although I recently did a cartoon involving some bling), so I actually Googled “holla” and got this from

1. A way for a brotha to say he wants to get in your pants

2. A pimp ass way of saying ‘what up’

3. May be used to end a conversation

So I can sleep at night, I’ll assume this person intended definition number three. (And yes, I do work in color.)

Talk Talk Please !! I made up a cartoon and named it Sammy Kazam!

Sir, please step away from the keyboard. Nice and easy, that’s it. Come on now, I know you don’t want to send that email…
