The cartoon blog of Andertoons cartoonist Mark Anderson. He discusses his cartoons, cartooning, comics and, oddly enough, LEGO.

Apparently there’s been quite a bit of press regarding this:
It’s some sort of limited statue thingy that fanboy collectors get nerd-ons over.
This from Fox “News”:
Spider-Man is one lucky guy.
His girlfriend Mary Jane does his laundry, has a lot of cleavage and wears a cute little pink thong that sticks out of her jeans. At least that’s the image one comic-book illustrator portrays in a new collectable statue that has the comic blogosphere up in arms.
Sideshow Collectibles’ Mary Jane Comiquette is more than 14 inches of buxom Mary Jane. But the sight of Spidey’s gal spilling out of her clothes over a load of super wash has some calling the $125 collectable a sexist piece of trash.
“The statue represents a big step backwards for those concerned about the state and future of comic books,” said blogger Sleestak, under a May 11 posting titled “Mary Jane, the Other White Meat.”
Illustrator Adam Hughes created the limited edition statue, described as “Mary Jane discover[ing] that her superhero husband has slipped some of his laundry into the mix, but she’s not looking too displeased about Peter’s naughty little transgression.”
So here’s what I can get from this. People are mad because:
GASP!
I don’t mean to shock anyone, but check out a Cosmo next time you’re buying milk. It’s chock full of boobs.
And suggesting a spouse might wash clothes in addition to his/her own? Well that’s just awful. (Note to self – from now now my wife rinses her own damn dishes!)
Honestly people, this is barely interesting, and it’s surely not news. It’s a pin-up paperweight that appeals to comic book guys. Get over it.
That being said, here’s some more gratuitous pics:

I saw Spidey 3 last night; at the Imax no less.
First things first, everything I’d heard about the Sandman effects are true and then some. Wow, wow, and wow. Honestly, the scene where he first reforms himself is oddly beautiful.
The action scenes are all tour de forces, the story felt like a good logical move forward from the last two films, and all of the acting is very good. Even small parts are given their chance to shimmer. (I’m looking at you, Mageina Tovah.)
But for all the spectacle, humor and pathos, you can’t help but get the feeling that Raimi indulged himself occasionally to the detriment of other plot elements.
Example: An extensive odd dance number where Peter rubs Gwen Stacy in MJ’s face lasts far too long, while Harry accepting his father’s death suffers from quick inattention, and a poor monologue/plot device to boot.
As a Spidey fan, of course I was excited about the inclusion of Gwen Stacy and Venom, but to be perfectly honest, neither were really necessary to the plot. My impression is that someone pushed for them, and Raimi acquiessed to a) please management, and, b) avoid a lesser director mucking about with them later. (Of course I could be wrong, but I seem to remember an online video of Avi Arad talking about convincing Raimi to include Venom.)
All of this being said, it is a really fun movie, and while lacking a final polish, is still better than 90% of the genre being ground out these days. It did not, however, manage to crack my top three superhero flick list:
1) Spider-Man 2
2) Batman (1989)
3) The Incredibles, tied with any Michelle Pfeiffer scene in Batman Returns
Go check it out in the theater; it’s worth it.

Yep, it’s true. They’re releasing these things like crazy. Another few and I can cobble together the entire movie.
Anyway, this one has even more Brock/Venom stuff (joy!).
There’s a nice bit with Topher Grace in the church…
…an interesting, and eventually kinda comic look at Peter getting a better look at the costume…
…see what I mean? (Hee-hee-hee!)
But for me the best part is Columbia logo at the beginning…
…now watch closely…
Nice!
You can see the trailer here. (Hat tip to SuperHero Hype!)

OK, another new trailer for Spider-Man 3 out today. Not much new, except a few more looks at Venom:
Oh baby, I cannot wait!
BTW, if you haven’t seen the 7-minute fight footage, go now and watch!
