Once More, I’m Back…

OK, I’m gonna have to create a new category for “sorry I’ve been gone so long” entries.

Well, there’s a lot to catch up on…

Firstly, as previously noted, we’re officially moved into the new place! I can even find most everything I’m looking for, unless it’s garage related; that looks like a tool filled dirty bomb was detonated.

We’ve ordered some new furniture and I’m working on getting my office set up. I’d show you some pics, but I want the final reveal (thank you “Trading Spaces”) to really knock your socks off.

We’ve also found out what the upcoming Anderson addition’s gender will be… CAUTION! SPOILERS AHEAD!

According to the ultrasound tech who called Henry right, we’re going to be welcoming Bonnie Elizabeth Anderson to the family tree!

Let’s see… I also found out I’ve been accepted into the National Cartoonist Society!

Some of my cartoon buddies have been trying to get me to get on board for some time so I finally filled out the ap, gathered my recommendations, provided my urine sample, and sent it all in. And they BIT!

SUCKERS!!!

Seriously, I’m looking forward to seeing what all the hub-bub is about. At the very least I should get some cool pics at the Reubens in Chicago this year.

Oh, I had a toon in Reader’s Digest recently and I think I have one in the current special edition of HBR. Check ’em out.

Well, that’s about it for now. Like I said, I’ll try to get some pics up as soon as I have something good to show you. And I promise to try to get some decent blogs flowing again.

See ya in a bit…

Cartoonversations

So last Friday I went downtown and hung out with some Chicagoland cartoonists for a few hours, and I gotta tell ya, it felt good.

There were some folks I didn’t get the chance to really sit down and talk to, but I got into some good (and funny) discussions with Compu-toon‘s Charles Boyce, Sue Cargill of Commie Dog, and illustrators Brian Diskin & Neil Shapiro.

Most everyone brought a small portfolio to pass around, and Pat brought his copy of his new book, What Would Satan Do? and cell phone pics of his daughter.

So often being a cartoonist means working in your own little bubble. It’s a funny bubble, and it’s really comfortable, but a bubble nonetheless, so it was nice to be able to commiserate and goof around in some other bubbles for a while. Hopefully this will become more of a regular event!

Reuben on Wry, Please

The NCS had its big Reuben awards this weekend. There’s always a lot of press about Cartoonist of the Year (well, not a lot, but that’s another blog), but, being a gag cartoonist myself, I’m always more excited about the gag category.

And this year I’m excited for New Yorker cartoonist, Robert Weber.

Certainly Sam Gross and Glenn McCoy are no slouches either, but Weber’s style really makes me feel like a fraud, hence, he’s a total badass.

So, since no other blogs will, and because gag cartoonists are usually considered the red-headed step-children of the cartooning community…

CONGRATUALTIONS, ROBERT WEBER!!!

National Cartoonists Society Site Get Welcome Facelift

NCS

As Mark Heath mentioned on yesterday’s Frog Blog, the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) has a new website up and running.

According to outgoing NCS president, Steve McGarry…

“This website was designed and constructed, over a period of many months, by the Presidential offspring, Joe and Luke McGarry. During my four years as NCS President, they have created the opening movies that we use to open the Reuben Awards evenings, they have helped design and operate the AV productions we stage during the Reuben Weekend seminars and have generally scanned and htmled way above and beyond the call of filial duty. On behalf of everyone in the NCS, I want to thank them for all their hard work and a series of jobs wonderfully well done … and promise that this is the last time we use them as cheap child labor. When Stromoski takes over in May, he vwill have to shamelessly exploit his own kid.”

I like the new look and usability a lot, although some of the headline graphics look a tad pixilated, but that’s just nitpicking.

I’m hoping this facelift signals a site that will be updated a bit more often.

I might even have to apply for membership some time…
