Success in Comics DVD

OK, there’s plenty of sniping in the comments, but it’s nice seeing there’s so much interest in a DVD of the recent Success in Comics Seminar:

From Bill Kellogg via The Daily Cartoonist:

The primary reasons are; there were a couple speakers that asked us not to film them or at least not make it available if we did – which would leave some big holes. In addition, as it was put several times in the comments and e-mails directly to me, we feel it would be unfair to all of those who attended and paid the $350, paid for airfare, hotel, food, etc., and took vacation time to be there. We are going to do a “promo” video with clips & highlights that we will put up on the Tundra site at some point.

Seems fair to me.

Dunno if/when I might release my presentation online, but I’ll letcha know if/when I do.

What Didn’t Stay In Vegas

So it’s been a few days since the Success in Comics Seminar put on by the good folks at Tundra , and I wanted to just throw some things out there that have really stuck with me:

  1. Don’t wait for a syndicate contract to be a cartoonist. If you want to be syndicated, that’s great, but you can earn a living in the meantime.
  2. Hang in there. Most cartoonists quit quickly. Don’t.
  3. There are more opportunities out there to sell cartoons and yourself than I’d believed – speaking engagements, craft fairs, schools, etc… Believe me, I’m considering them all now.
  4. Find people to help you. I’m hiring an assistant as we speak.
  5. Tabasco themed slot machines are not my friend.

I so hope that this weekend worked out for Chad and Bill, because this was just a tremendous event. I don’t know if I’ve seen one focused on independent cartooning like this, and, if you missed it, pray that there’s another.

Just finishing up here at the first annual Success in Comics Seminar hosted by the good folks (and seriously, I’m not sure I’ve met nicer folks) at Tundra .

I’ve mostly been concentrating on making sure my presentation went well and listening to everyone else, so if you want a good in-depth look at each speaker, check out the Daily Cartoonist.

Everyone has been great so far (still two presentations to go as I write this), and so many nice folks were good enough to come, and the Tundra organization has been so, well, organized, that I think you can call this an unqualified success.

I know I’ve gotten tons of really really good ideas (none of which I will share here), and I’m just so energized now. I can’t wait to get back home and dig in.

Anyway, a huuuuuge thanks to Chad, Bill, Karen, Mark, Zack and a few other folks I know I’m forgetting for putting together a unique, fun, educational experience like I’ve not seen before. Assuming this happens again next year, you want to be here next time.
