2007 Reubens

Congrats to all the winners!

Now some thoughts:

  • Bill Amend (Cartoonist of the Year) – Totally deserved it and then some. In a world of so-so stripping, Foxtrot has always been top notch.
  • Tom Richmond (Advertising Illustration) – The guy wows me in every respect: art, blogging, Batsuits, and the fact that he could break me in half.
  • Drew Dernavich (Gag Cartoons) – It was an impressive group this year. Were I Drew I’d still be dancing a jig.
  • Carla Ventresca (Greeting Cards) – As I get more and more into cards, I see more and more Carla. And now this… I’m going to sob quietly in the fetal position for a while.
  • Hilary Price (Newspaper Panels) – Hooray, hooray, HOORAY to one of the best cartoonists in the biz!

Additional thoughts:

On the NCS site “…the winners of the NCS Division Awards are boldfaced”

Winners

They added an asterisk to help out, but it still took me leaning way into my largish monitor to read the winners. How ’bout a bigger font and or/italics?

(OK, this isn’t Reubens related, but it’s on the news page. Will somebody please replace this pixelated scrawl?!)

Pixelated

Also, if someone doesn’t post some new video of someone else winning the Reuben, I’m going to scream. Nothing against the Greg Evans vid, but it’s four years old; it needs some company.

And the Silver T-Square – I’m not going to comment on whether or not the McGarry boys deserve the award, but I will say that giving it to the children of a recent NCS president might appear inappropriate.

All this being said, I do sorta miss having gone this year. Carousing with Lynch, hobnobbing with gobs of cartoonists, cumberbunds… Maybe next year.

Jay Kennedy Remembered

Received this email via the NCS this morning:

King Features has the sad duty to announce that Editor in Chief Jay Kennedy died yesterday in a drowning accident while on vacation in Costa Rica.

We do not have the full details yet, but wanted to be in immediate communication with the cartooning community. We will notify you when funeral arrangements have been completed.

Claudia Smith

Director of Advertising & Public Relations

King Features Syndicate

You’re gonna read a lot over the next few days about how Jay took the time to hand write a note on a standard rejection form letter. Or how he helped a cartoonist starting out with a New Breed buy. Or how he took the time to say hello and talk at an event, no matter who you were.

The best part is its all true.

Listen, I didn’t know Jay well; we were barely acquaintances. But the few times I bumped into him, he knew who I was, gave me a moment, and left me with a kind word.

He was a really nice guy who did a hell of a lot for a lot of cartoonists. A better legacy I can’t imagine.

My sympathies to his family, friends, and co-workers.

Submit! Submit I Say!

Reubenstatue350-2Yes, it’s that time of year again when we cartoonists dig through our file cabinets to find the funniest cartoons with the fewest creases, send them to the NCS and…  well…  usually nothing happens.

Still, every year a few really talented people win a neat statue!

Goodie Bag Closeup

BagcloseupSomeone commented on the Goodie Bag entry that they wanted to see the bag a little closer up. (Just click on the thumbnail to see the larger image.)

I scanned it in as best I could, but I can’t quite read the signature. Anyone know who did this?

The folks portrayed are Cathy Guisewite (with the cement shoes), Dick Locher (as Dick Tracy – note also the silver t-square in his left hand), Elwood Smith (in green I think), Ralph Steadman behind Cathy (if you look closely, I think the gun has a pen nib at the end of the barrel), Everett Peck (in orange) and Stephen Silver (with the violin case and the naked mole rat). Note also Eisner’s Spirit scaring the bejeezus out of Duckman!
