Gotta Watch TV

FrontlineLately I’ve been watching more and more PBS, and one of the most interesting/valuable/scary programs lately was part 3 of Frontline’s News War series, “What’s Happening to the News.”

An incredibly in-depth look at newspapers, blogs, and the internet, this is (God help me I’m going to say it) must see TV (whew!) for cartoonists.

Go watch it online for free!

The Addams Family (Click Click)

Tish-1 I’m watching the first season of The Addams Family right now from Netflix. and a few things have already struck me:

The amazing casting – Jackie Coogan’s Fester, Carolyn Jones’ still oddly sexually fascinating Morticia, and John Astin’s perfect, and I mean perfect Gomez.

Vic Mizzy’s theme is iconic of course, but the background music for the show itself… I’m gonna be humming those themes all weekend.

The set decoration – how much fun must that have been?!

Man, I’m gonna enjoy this even more than I thought.

(BTW, click on the thumbnail for a nice musical moment.)

Jon Stewart on “Sit Down Comedy”

I know I’ve discussed this with other cartoonists before, but I don’t think I could say it better than Jon Stewart did recently on TV Land’s “Sit Down Comedy”:

Humor is by its very essence incredibly subjective and not seen as something that is in any way… It’s not like singing and painting… Singing and painting is magic.

Somebody can paint a beautiful picture; people can look at that and think ‘that’s magic. I don’t know how to do that.’

Singing, when people sing beautifully, you know. You can hear your own voice.

Everyone thinks they’re funny.

So, for a comedian, no one thinks that what we’re doing is anything, they just think we’re f**king lucky.

He goes on a minute later…

It’s a very interesting… because it’s so accessible to peoples’ own… everyone can be funny, or knows that they’re funny. It’s a very accessible form, so in terms of any artistic merit, it ranks between, let’s say, mime and stripping.
