Brooke McEldowney – Inside the Cartoonist’s Studio

This week’s Inside the Cartoonist’s Studio guest is 9 Chickwwed Lane and Pigborn creator, Brooke McEldowney!

Let’s get right to the questions!

1) If you were to cast a movie entirely with cartoon characters, what movie would it be and who would star in it?

Pibgorn. It would star Claudia Black as Drusilla, Shawnee Smith as Pibgorn, and I think I could be convinced to play Geoff.

2) You’re a syndicate editor launching a new comic strip. What’s the worst possible title you can think of?

My Favorite Vasectomy.

3) A light bulb over a cartoon’s head signifies an idea, while a string of random characters denotes swearing. Invent a new cartooning icon and what it means.

An equal sign, which would designate an abrupt shift from a Nietschean weltanschauung to something a little more Kierkegaardian.

Thanks a bunch Brooke! And stay tuned for my new strip “My Favorite Vasectomy” coming soon to a newspaper near you!

Jib Jab Cartoonists Sued

You know that cartoon where Kerry and Bush sing about each other in a pradoy of ‘This Land is My Land’? (I know! I love it too!) The creators of the cartoon, Gregg and Evan Spiridellis, are being sued by the copyright holder to Woody Guthrie’s classic folk song.

“Ludlow Music asked Jib Jab Media (at jibjab.com) to remove its parody and present an accounting of all incomes derived from the cartoon, complaining it has caused substantial harm to the value of Guthrie’s song. Acting on behalf of Jib Jab, the Electronic Freedom Frontier responded that use of the music is protected by the fair use doctrine of U.S. copyright laws,” reports Simon Houpt of TheGlobeAndMail.com.

I’m no lawyer, but this seems a pretty cut and dry case of a legal use for parody purposes.

New Andertoons Up & Running

The new Andertoons.com is here!

We’ve been making lots of changes lately, so allow me to give you the tour!

The most obvious change is the new design and content for the home page. We’ve added a menu of our most popular cartoon topics to make it easier to get what you’re looking for. Of course the cartoon search engine is still working as usual in the upper right hand corner of each page. Here’s a list of the topics we’ve singled out:

Office Cartoons
Sales & Business Cartoons
Family Cartoons
Baby Cartoons
Cat and Dog Cartoons
Animal Cartoons
Doctor and Medical Cartoons
Law Cartoons
Psychology Cartoons
Education and Teacher Cartoons
Sports Cartoons
Holiday and Christmas Cartoons

The other big change is the integration of the Andertoons blog into the actual site. Of course, if you’re reading this you’ve already figured that out, but hey, I wanna be thorough.

All of the posts have been categorized for easy browsing. Don’t forget to check out our ‘Inside the Cartoonist’s Studio’ stuff too! It’s a hoot!

I’d like to thank my new partners at Karma Marketing & Media, a website design company in St Cloud, MN. They’re responsible for the redesign, and lemme tell you, they had they’re work cut out for them! I’m really pleased with the way it turned out and I hope you will be too!

Well, that’s about it for this post. I hope you dig the new stuff and, as always, the cartoons!

Talk to you later!
