1977 BBC Schulz Interview (Audio!)

“We must always remember that what I’m trying to do is just simply draw funny pictures.”

Peanuts lovers know that Charles Schulz’s funny pictures were far from simple. As almost every cartoonist will tell you, he was one of my biggest influences.

Here’s some wonderful audio of Schulz talking with BBC interviewer R. Morris about the origin of Snoopy, searching for ideas, and, oddly enough, Billie Jean King. Enjoy!

His Ears Grow When He Lies?

“For me, he’s become a little smaller, his ears pointier,” says Matt Davies, Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist about his renditions of President George W. Bush. “I draw him with his eyes closed a lot. That just seems to fit. And whistling a lot – he doesn’t seem to care much about anything.”

There’s an interesting analysis of editorial cartoonists’ take on drawing Bush by Mike Peters in The Dallas Morning News.

Apparently when Bush is doing well cartoonists draw him larger and with normal size ears, but as things turn sour, the president shrinks and his ears become enormous. An allusion to Pinocchio perhaps?

Magilla Guerrilla Marketing

“Everyone on campus knows I’m the ‘Adult Swim’ girl. It makes you pretty instantly popular,” says University of Kentucky senior Shreenah Willis.

Willis is one of Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” college marketers. A group of students hired and trained by the cartoon channel to help get their peers watching the late-night cartoons.

They throw parties, hand out posters and t-shirts and organize pub crawls in hopes of drawing attention to shows like “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” – a cartoon where the main characters are all food.

And it appears to be working. “Adult Swim” viewership is up and advertisers are noticing and flocking to hawk their wares to the college crowd.

Maybe they should call it Magilla Guerrilla marketing. Check out this article to read more!
